Staking ETH: Lido vs Rocket Pool — A Tested Comparison

Running your own Ethereum validator requires 32 ETH — roughly $80,000–$100,000 at most prices — and keeping a server online 24/7. Liquid staking protocols solve both problems: deposit any amount of ETH, receive a receipt token you can use in DeFi, and earn staking rewards without running infrastructure.
Lido and Rocket Pool are the two dominant permissionless options. I've used both with real ETH. Here's what I learned.

Yield figures are approximations based on Ethereum network conditions in mid-2026. Both protocols' APR fluctuates with total staked ETH on the network and validator queue depth. Check each protocol's dashboard for live rates before depositing.
Lido: Dominant for a Reason
Lido is the simplest possible experience: connect your wallet on lido.fi, enter an ETH amount, and click "Stake." You immediately receive stETH at a 1:1 ratio. From then on, your stETH balance increases daily as staking rewards accrue — a mechanism called "rebasing."
The practical advantage of Lido's scale is deep DeFi liquidity. You can deposit stETH as collateral on Aave to borrow stablecoins, or provide liquidity on Curve's stETH/ETH pool. When I staked a test amount on Lido in late 2023, receiving stETH and then depositing it into Aave took under 5 minutes and cost roughly $3 in gas on mainnet.
The Decentralization Concern
Lido controls ~28% of all staked ETH. This is a genuine systemic risk: if Lido's DAO were coerced, exploited, or simply made a bad governance decision, it could affect a significant portion of Ethereum's validator set. Ethereum's developers have publicly noted this concentration as a concern. Lido is addressing it incrementally (via DVT — Distributed Validator Technology), but the concentration remains large.
Rocket Pool: More Decentralized, Slightly More Complex
Rocket Pool's architecture is meaningfully different. Instead of a DAO-approved operator set, anyone can run a Rocket Pool node by depositing 8 ETH of their own plus RPL tokens as collateral — this collateral requirement aligns node operators' incentives and provides slashing insurance for stakers.
For regular stakers (not node operators), the experience is similar to Lido: stake on rocketpool.net, receive rETH. The key difference is the token mechanics — rETH doesn't rebalance; instead its exchange rate against ETH rises over time to reflect accumulated rewards. This makes rETH slightly simpler for tax accounting in some jurisdictions (one taxable event on exit vs. daily reward accrual for stETH).
I've found rETH easier to track for tax purposes because rewards accumulate in the exchange rate rather than as daily balance changes. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
The Decentralization Advantage
Rocket Pool's permissionless mini-pool structure means anyone globally can become a node operator. The resulting validator set is geographically and operationally diverse in ways Lido's curated set is not. For users who care about Ethereum's long-term health, this matters.
Which Should You Use?
Choose Lido if…
- You want maximum DeFi composability (Aave, Curve)
- You're staking under 1 ETH
- You prioritize the simplest possible UX
- You're uncomfortable with Lido's ETH concentration
Choose Rocket Pool if…
- Decentralization and network health matter to you
- You prefer rETH's exchange-rate model for tax clarity
- You're willing to accept slightly lower DeFi liquidity
- You need stETH's specific liquidity pairs in a DeFi strategy
Risks Both Share
- Smart contract risk: Both protocols have been audited, but bugs in any smart contract can result in fund loss. Neither is insured by a government body.
- ETH price risk: Your staked ETH can still lose USD value if ETH price falls, regardless of staking rewards.
- Slashing risk: If a node operator behaves maliciously or goes offline repeatedly, Ethereum's protocol can "slash" (penalize) their stake. Both protocols have mitigation mechanisms, but the risk is not zero.
- Regulatory risk: Liquid staking protocols operate in a regulatory grey area in several jurisdictions. This can affect access and token liquidity.
